Take notes on chapters 8 and 9 by using this format:

To hypothesize about Holden’s id, ego, and superego by establishing which of his needs aren’t being met.
To revisit Freud’s and Maslow’s theories, and assess their usefulness in understanding characters in the text.

4. Group Work
With 2-3 other students, review your notes for chapter 7. Pay close attention to the character’s motivation.
Based on what all group members have written down, identify which of Holden’s needs aren’t being met (according to Maslow).
Write out what you think his id and
superego are saying inside Holden’s
mind. Then, quickly
describe Holden’s
ego.

5. Usefulness of Theories Chart
Label the second column “Freud/Maslow.” Then, answer these questions:
Can you describe this theory in 1-2 sentences? If so, do it!
On a scale of 1-5, 5 being the most useful, assess how helpful this theory is in helping you to better understand the characters. Write a quick explanation.
Label 1-2 aspects that are helpful to you, and anything about this theory that makes it less useful to you.

Read chapters 10 & 11 of Catcher in the Rye.
