1 Walt Whitman Science Course Overview
Don DeMember Science Resource Teacher, NBCT

2 State Requirements 3 credits in science One biological science
One physical science class (Chemistry, Physics, Geoscience) One science elective New High School Assessment for Science beginning 2018 – MISA Maryland Integrated Science Assessment – current 9th grades will be first class that will need to pass or graduation.

3 Core Science Classes Biology (honors or regular)
Chemistry (honors, reg. or environmental) Physics or Advanced Placement Science Class (Physics - AP, honors or regular OR APES) Many paths. Lots of flexibility! Recommended vs Required.

4 Ninth Grade Courses Honors Biology Biology Applied Science – ESOL Only
Intro Biology Highly recommended to take Honors Geometry but not required Biology For students in Geometry and Algebra 1 Applied Science – ESOL Only ELL (English Language Learners) Students who are below grade level in reading or math Prepares students for Biology the following year Curriculum is changing over the next few years Project based More technology

5 Honors vs On-Level Classes
About 30% more concepts. Cover material faster and deeper. More application and synthesis of concepts expected and tested. Math Content: Biology – more complicated graphs, Chem & Physics – lots of word problems. On-Level 70% to 80% of the same content as honors. Reading level and work level more manageable. Math applications more structured in some units.

6 Foundations of Biomedical Science
New program for Academic Program: 6 courses over 4 years. Practical Experiences: To Be Developed. Intensity increases over 4 years. Open to all. Sign ups will begin Feb 1. Academic Foundation Core: Bio, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy, AP Biology (2 credits) Advanced Electives: Biotechnology, Internship, Molecular Bio (future) Practical Foundation Guest speakers, shadowing professionals, conference and workshop attendance, research internships Reflection on Experiences as the documentation of their commitment. 4 Year Portfolio Staying in the Program Progress of portfolio TBD

7 Advanced Science Offerings
AP Biology (double period) AP Chemistry (double period) AP Physics 1 Mechanics & AP Physics 2 Electricity and Magnetism (double period) AP Physics C (calculus based) Mechanics AP Physics C (double period) Mechanics and E & M AP Environmental Science Anatomy and Physiology Biotechnology & Bioengineering new Science Internships Non-Honors Courses Geoscience Astronomy Forensics Environmental Science Science Internships

14 Whitman Science Highlights
Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists 16 out of last 20 years. Finalist just announced today Jan. 24, 2018!!! Highest average High School Assessment (HSA) Biology scores in MD (high ESOL Biology scores too) Internship program with 35 interns in places like, NIH, NIST, Georgetown, U of MD., and others. 6 AP science classes offered Higher scores than most other schools in Mont. County AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Physics C– some of the highest average in the state of MD Top 25 U of MD, College Park Engineering Pipeline schools for preparing students who major in engineering at UMCP US Sci & Engineering Festival, Guest speakers, clubs and competitions. Offering science electives to fit student interests

15 Physics Lots of options and confusion First Year Second Year Regular
Honors AP Physics 1 & 2 – Mechanics and – E & M no calculus. Double period Second Year AP Physics C – Mechanics AP Physics C – Mechanics and E & M Double Period
