A primer for Department Chairs Meeting October, 23, 2017

2 What does the law say? “A responsible employee would include any employee who has the authority to take action to redress the harassment, who has the duty to report to appropriate school officials sexual harassment or any other misconduct by students or employees, or an individual who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or responsibility.” Department of Education. 3 Responsible Employees
Have the authority to stop problematic behavior and/or prevent prohibited conduct from reoccurring, i.e. Supervisors, managers, or coaches who can take corrective action. Nature of role (or University designation) on campus that gives you significant responsibility for the welfare of students i.e. Student Affairs/ Campus Life, Faculty Advisers, Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, etc. Leads or coordinators who do not have supervisory responsibilities; but, they have authority over a system or resource in which they can stop problematic behavior or prevent its reoccurrence

4 TA Example Not a Responsible Employee
Provides general support, grading, or advising on an individual or group level. Serves as a liaison between students and the department or the university NOT designated by the University Has the authority to take corrective action to stop or prevent problematic behavior – i.e. change lab assignments, change group assignments, grant or remove a privilege of a peer or student.
