3. Roosevelt Comes to Power
Political bosses in New York couldn’t stand Teddy Roosevelt, so they urged him to run for Vice-President so he’d leave New York
He won the vice-presidency and ended up taking over after McKinley was assassinated in 1901.
He is the youngest president ever to hold the office.
“It is the duty of the president to act upon the theory that he is the steward of the people, and … to assume that he has the legal right to do whatever the needs of the people demand, unless the Constitution or the laws explicitly forbid him to do it.”
The Square Deal Emerges

4. Federal Power against Companies
The Square Deal- progressive reforms promoted by Roosevelt to ensure fair practices for workers and immigrants.
Attempted to break up trusts using the Sherman Anti-Trust Act
Broke up the Northern Securities Company in 1904, controlling railways.
He would promote the working class by helping coal miners in their strike in over wages and working hours.
Brought both sides to the white house to discuss and mediate.
Workers won a 10% pay raise and a shorter workday, but they had to give up their right to a union and organization for 3 years.
The Government should intervene with public welfare.

5. Promoting the Environment
After reading material from muckrakers, he appointed commissions to examine the meatpacking industry.
Passed the meat inspection act, 1906
Government had to pay for inspections.
To get rid of the snake oils that apparently cured everything, Roosevelt worked with Congress to pass the Food and Drug Act, calling for truth in labeling, and removing contaminants from food.
Conservation became a national movement, setting aside 148 million acres of forest.
Hired Pinchot, a progressive, to lead the agency
Does not mean preservation, conservation only set aside specific areas, and then developed others for the common good.

6. Civil Rights and Roosevelt
Supported individuals, but not the entire race.
Appointed African Americans as postmasters and head of customshouses.
Invited Booker T Washington to the White House to speak on opportunities for African Americans.
W. E. B. Du Bios would promote his own Niagara movement for equal rights, and aid in forming the NAACP during this time period, but it would not have a large effect on the Progressive Movement.
