1. Admission Committee Activity
Pretend that you and your group members are the admissions committee for the University of Kentucky. The sample letters in front of you are from students who want to be accepted into the university. STEP 1: Annotate the letters for the focus, theme, diction, and structure. Look for other literary elements like how the authors use similes, metaphors, personification, and imagery. How do these elements support the theme?

2. Admission Committee Activity
STEP 2: When you have finished annotating, discuss whether or not these students should be admitted into the university. Your decision must be supported by at least three reasons that tie back to theme, diction or structure.

3. Admission Committee Activity
STEP 3: When you are finished select ONE student to deny. Write this student a letter to explain why he or she was declined admission. Be sure to explain at least three reasons for your committee’s decision. Your letter must be at least two thirds of a page. Try to make your letter as realistic as possible.
