1 Ocean Zones An ELL/ESL PowerPoint for literacy and/or Science By havefunlearning

2 How can we describe our vast ocean?
Essential Question How can we describe our vast ocean?

3 Sunlight Zone

4 This is also called The Euphotic Zone, and this means that there is sunlight.

5 Eu: Good, Well Photo: Light
Word Study Eu: Good, Well Photo: Light

6 Plants can live in the euphotic or sunlight zone.

7 The sun reaches these plants
The sun reaches these plants. It gives them energy to make their own food.

8 Plants make their own food. This is called photosynthesis.

9 Word Study Photo: Light Synthesis: Make Photosynthesis: This is a process during which plants use energy from sunlight to make their own food.

10 Animals can also live in the sunlight or euphotic zone.

11 Here is a green turtle that is swimming in the sunlight zone.

12 The Sunlight Zone Sometimes the water is clear.
Sometimes the water is murky. People cannot see what is in it very well.

13 This large shark lives in the sunlight or euphotic zone.

14 Examples of animals in the Sunlight or Euphotic Zone
Rays live in the euphotic zone. Sharks live in this zone.

15 Pufferfish live in the euphotic zone.

16 Sunlight This is the top layer. There is a lot of sunlight.
This is a bright zone. It is not very deep. Sometimes the water is clear, and sometimes it is murky. 60 – 660 feet deep or 200 meters.

17 Look at the land in this photo.

18 The land has a slope.

19 There is land in each zone.

20 What is the temperature in the sunlight or the euphotic zone?
Temperature: 104 degrees to 27 degrees Fahrenheit. Water boils at 212 degrees F. Water never boils in this zone. This part of the ocean has the least pressure. Low pressure.

21 Remember: Water freezes at 32 degrees F
Remember: Water freezes at 32 degrees F. Sometimes there is ice in this zone.

22 Ice on the Ocean

23 Very large chunks of ice are called icebergs.

24 Icebergs are under the water and on top of the water.

25 This is an iceberg.

26 Disphotic Zone or Twilight Zone

27 Dis: Away from Photo: Light
Word Study Dis: Away from Photo: Light

28 Word Study Twilight: A dark blue color
The time of day after sunset or before sunrise

29 Twilight Zone Color: twilight blue
This is the middle ocean layer. This is sometimes called the disphotic zone. Photo means light, and dis means away. It is the zone away from light. The sunlight is very faint (very little light)

30 It is dark in the twilight zone. Some of the animals light up.

31 How deep is it in the Twilight or the Disphotic Zone?

32 The Twilight Zone Is 660 to 3,300 feet (200 to 1,000 meters) deep.

33 Animals of the Twilight Zone

34 The Midnight Zone = Aphotic
Midnight means the middle of the night, 12:00 AM. It is very dark.

35 A: Not or No Photo: Light
Word Study: Aphotic A: Not or No Photo: Light

36 Life in the Aphotic Zone

37 The Abyssal Zone The word, abyss, means no bottom in Greek.
It extends from 4000 meters (13,124 feet) to 6000 meters (19,686 feet). The temperature is 39 degrees F or freezing. Very few animals live here. Plants don’t live here.

38 The Trenches Ocean trenches are the deepest (most deep) part of the ocean. They are valleys in the ocean floor. The pressure is very, very high. Animals are usually microscopic. An example of animal life includes algae or slime-mold.

39 Ocean Trenches

40 There is no sunlight. The temperature is freezing. The pressure is high.

41 Questions for Discussion Did you learn to describe the ocean?
How is sunlight important to ocean life? Which parts of the ocean have the most life? What is photosynthesis? Can you describe some animals that live in the ocean? Photo means light. Can you name some words that have photo in them?

42 Quiz Another name for euphotic zone is ______________________ zone. It has many animals and plants. Midnight b) Twilight c) sunlight 2. The most animals live in the __________ zone. Sunlight b) Midnight c) Aphotic This quiz is intended to be given after the student has studied a great deal.

43 3. Aphotic means _______________.
a) Lots of light b) no light 4. Disphotic means______________. A) away from light b) lots of light 5. Draw a picture of an iceberg.
