I will tell you the kind of special day I want: free the people you have put in prison unfairly and undo their chains. Free those to whom you are unfair and stop their hard labour.
Share your food with the hungry and bring poor, homeless people into your own homes…
From the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 58, verses 6 to 7

5. Engage Woolly Hat Day is on this Friday, 26th January.
It is a special day to help people be aware of the needs of those who are homeless.
St Mungo’s Broadway is a charity that offers help and resources to homeless people.
So, on Friday, bring in a donation, if you wish, to support the work of St Mungo’s Broadway and wear a hat – the funnier the better.

What do you think are the reasons why people become homeless in the UK?
What do you think can be done to help homeless people?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.

Hear our prayer today for all women and men, boys and girls who are homeless this day.
For all these people, we pray that you will provide shelter, security and hope.
Jesus, help us to see your face in the eyes of every homeless person we meet
so that we may be empowered through word and deed,
and through the political means we have,
to bring justice and peace to those who are homeless.

Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
