2 7 Adding Data from Other Sources
Stations Along the Way Getting Word tables, text files, and Web data into Excel 2007 Linking to data in other worksheets Pulling data from an existing database connection

3 Why Import Data? You can import existing data into Excel from several different formats, such as: Word tables Text files Web data Import data to avoid having to retype it You can link data to a source file so that it is continuously updated

4 Importing a Word Table Select existing Word table and copy to Clipboard Paste the data where you want it to appear in Excel Paste Link the data if you want to maintain a link to the source Word file

5 Importing a Text File A text file contains unformatted data
Delimited text files Character separates columns of data Example: comma in CSV files Fixed-width text files No delimiter – each column is equal width Common with older file formats Use Text Import Wizard to import a file

6 Importing Data from the Web
Use a Web query to maintain a link to the Web page in Excel The computer must be connected to the Internet when you update the data A common use for this feature is to track stock prices over a period of time You can apply conditional formatting to the imported data

7 Linking to Data in Other Worksheets
You can link to or reference data located in another Excel worksheet Paste Link the data if: You want to see the data You want to ensure that data is current Reference the data with formulas if: You have a large amount of data You want to keep content manageable

8 Importing Access Data You can import existing data from an Access table into Excel Imported data can be viewed as a: Table PivotTable Report PivotChart and PivotTable Report You can pull data from an existing database connection into other Excel worksheets

9 Discussion Questions Why pull data from somewhere else rather than retype it? What is an advantage of pulling data from Word rather than from a text file? What is a CSV file? What is a fixed-width file?

10 Discussion Questions (cont.)
