2 Week One Spelling Words

3 Week One Vocabulary Words
The following slides include the definitions for the words from the list that will also be used for vocabulary study. For each of these words, you should know the following: Spelling Part of Speech Definition(s) How to use it in a sentence This week’s words: tremendous, mediocre, preliminary, irrelevant, and naïve.

4 Mediocre adjective 1. of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate: 2. not satisfactory; poor; inferior Sentences: There is far too much low and mediocre quality science going on out there that does not deserve to be reported or published. This is the week for mediocre sports movies.

5 Tremendous Adjective 1.extraordinarily great in size, amount, or intensity: a tremendous ocean liner; tremendous talent. 2. extraordinary in excellence: a tremendous movie. 3. dreadful or awful, as in character or effect; exciting fear; frightening; terrifying. Sentences: The rain is terrific for the weeds, which continue to pop up all over the test garden at a tremendous pace. Mozzarella came to mind first, because it's so tremendous with ripe tomatoes and basil.

6 Preliminary Adjective
1. preceding and leading up to the main part, matter, or business; introductory; preparatory Sentences: There are preliminary studies that are beginning to link acetaminophen use with both the rise of autism and asthma. Once he finished his inspection, he delivered a preliminary verdict. The company said the discussions were preliminary.

7 Naive Adjective 1.having or showing unaffected simplicity of nature or absence of artificiality; unsophisticated; ingenuous. 2.having or showing a lack of experience, judgment, or information; credulous: Sentence: She's so naive she believes everything she reads. He has a very naive attitude toward politics.

8 Irrelevant Adjective 1.not relevant; not applicable or pertinent
relevant = connected to the matter at hand Sentences: His lectures often stray to interesting but irrelevant subjects.

9 Week Two Spelling Words

10 Week Two Vocabulary Words
The following slides include the definitions for the words from the list that will also be used for vocabulary study. For each of these words, you should know the following: Spelling Part of Speech Definition(s) How to use it in a sentence This week’s words: accumulate, dilemma, trespass, accompany, commemorate

11 Accumulate Verb to gather or collect, often in gradual degrees
Sentence: The more faces they correctly identify the  more points they accumulate.

12 Dilemma Noun a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives. any difficult or perplexing situation or problem Sentence: Sometimes it takes a small, focused company  to solve a vexing design dilemma.

13 Trespass Noun or verb a wrongful entry upon the lands of another, or to wrongfully enter the lands of another (verb) an unlawful act causing injury to the person, property, or rights of another, committed withforce or violence, actual or implied Sentence: The hunters trespassed on the farmer’s property.

14 Accompany Verb to go along or in company with; join in action
Sentence: She will accompany him to science class.

15 Commemorate Verb to honor the memory of by some observance Sentence:
We are gathered here today to commemorate the veterans who sacrificed for our country.

16 Week Three Spelling Words

17 Week Three Vocabulary Words
The following slides include the definitions for the words from the list that will also be used for vocabulary study. For each of these words, you should know the following: Spelling Part of Speech Definition(s) How to use it in a sentence This week’s words: efficient, punctual, reassure, sufficient, initiation

18 In Addition… To knowing the form of the vocabulary word as it is written, you will also need to know its varying forms, which are listed on the following slides. For example: Beneficial = adjective Benefit = Noun: He has excellent benefits through her employer. Verb: We will all benefit from the new policies.

19 Efficient Adjective 1.performing or functioning in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effort;  having and using requisite knowledge, skill and industry; competent; capable Sentence: He is an efficient worker. Efficiency Noun, Plural efficiencies 1.the state or quality of being efficient; competency in performance Sentence: His efficiency has increased by 16%.

20 Punctual Adjective 1.strictly observant of an appointed or regular  time; not late; prompt Sentence: She is usually very punctual to work. Punctuality: Noun 1.the quality or state of being punctual Sentence: Her punctuality is impressive.

21 Reassure Verb (used with object), reassured, reassuring
1.to restore to assurance or confidence Sentence: Mrs. Terry reassured the class that they would do well on their parts of speech test. reassurance, noun (She gave him reassurance.) reassuringly, adverb (He spoke reassuringly.)

22 Sufficient Adjective 1.adequate for the purpose; enough Suffice:
Sentence: The amount of food we ordered was sufficient to feed our family. Suffice: verb (used without object), sufficed, sufficing 1.to be enough or adequate Sentence: The notes you have been given for the unit should suffice.

23 Initiation Noun 1.formal admission or acceptance into an
organization or club, adult status in one's community or society, etc. Sentence: The driver's license is the initiation rite into adulthood. Initiate: verb (used with object), initiated, initiating 1.to begin, set going, or originate: Sentence: He initiated the dinner conversation.
