1 Thank you for not chewing gum or anything else 
Materials: Pencil Notebook/Folder Lab Text pg. C-52 November 8 Agenda: Agenda/Bell work Act 34/35: Building in Boomtown Daily Objective: Today we will continue to prepare our building plans for Boomtown. Daily Question: Which of the 3 locations would you recommend building houses?

2 Activity 34 Preparing the Geologist’s Report
Procedure: Fill out the work sheet by looking though your notes/text book for the assigned activity numbers Fill in the data for the wetland & the cliff. Analysis Questions: 1 Type your report on either Seaside Cliff OR Delta Wetlands in google drive with your partner. You should have 4 paragraphs. This will be a classwork grade.  Share it with me when you are done

3 4 In addition to a 3, your presentation is able to thoroughly convince the audience that building at your location is the best choice. It appears that you thoroughly know what you are talking about and do not need the assistance of notecards. 3 PROJECT GRADE: ______Explain where you think the best place to build new houses in boomtown is. ______Explain 4 pieces of evidence for why this is the best place to build. ______Support your evidence by including pictures, charts & graphs for each piece of evidence. ______Explain at least four advantages for building in this area (more advantages = more convincing) ______Explain the main disadvantage (trade-off) for building in this area and/or possible risks ______Explain how to overcome the disadvantage (trade-off) – Engineer’s Report ______Explain how you will do what the city wants for your location – City Council Report ______Explain how the Ecology will be affected in your area (if it is a negative impact, tell them what you plan to do to make it positive/better) – Ecology Report ______Explain the Geology of your location – Remember, spin it positively, as you want to be convincing! ______Explain why the other locations are not the best location. ______Before & after picture of your location ______Presentation is between 3-5 minutes ______Information is in a logical order ______ Information used is correct ______Presentation is convincing PRESENTATION GRADE: ______You are able to present the information with help from notecard reminders ______ You keep eye contact with the class ______ You maintain a level 3-4 voice through-out the presentation 2 Some of the information is missing/incorrect. The presentation does not flow well and/or does not meet the time requirement. The presentation is read from the information off of a note card with-out looking up. 1 The majority of the information is missing/incorrect. The presentation does not flow well and/or does not meet the time requirement. The presentation is read from the slides with your back to the audience.

4 Green Hill High elevation Forest Expansion of current buildings
Good Example: High elevation Forest Expansion of current buildings Best view Affordable housing High elevation: means water will run off which makes it a good place to build houses. It also adds to the view Forest: The forest provides protection from erosion. Yes, some will be removed for construction, but we will add more grass and plants to help the area out. Expansion of current buildings: there are already buildings on green hill. We would just add on to the current road system to save resources and expand the community. Best view: The hill overlooks historic Boomtown with a great view of the Ocean in the distance Affordable housing: Since the hill is further away from the ocean, the cost of housing will decrease, but at the same time, you will still have the view, with less erosional forces acting on the land.

5 Green Hill Bad Example: The hill has a high elevation which means water will run off which makes it a good place to build houses. It also adds to the view The forest provides protection from erosion. Yes, some will be removed for construction, but we will add more grass and plants to help the area out. At Green Hill we will expand the buildings because there are already buildings on green hill. We would just add on to the current road system to save resources and expand the community. The hill has the best view because the hill overlooks historic Boomtown with a great view of the Ocean in the distance Affordable housing will be at Green Hill since the hill is further away from the ocean, the cost of housing will decrease, but at the same time, you will still have the view, with less erosional forces acting on the land.

6 Amount of Erosion and Run-off at each location
Good Example: The hill had the least amount of run-off and most amount of erosion. However, we can fix this by simply adding trees, grasses and shrubs which help to slow down erosion and soak up water so this is a problem that is easily fixed. In addition, we can add drainage systems so that the water will not affect the soil on the Hill at all. The drainage pipes will lead directly to the rolling river which is good place to put the excess water. The cliff and the marsh are not as good to build the houses because even though the soil of the cliff was the most resistant, it is also under the most erosional forces. Also, the marsh is very watery and even though we can pump out the water, it would be very expensive and it could break.

8 Activity 35: Building in Boomtown
Read through the engineer’s report, ecologist’s report and City Council’s report for Delta Marsh, Seaside Cliff and Green Hill.  Fill out worksheet 35.2 – Evidence From the City Council Meeting MAKE YOUR DECISION of where to build. Fill in worksheet 35.1 Find a partner(s)(2-3) that choose the SAME location as you! Type up your presentation in PowerPoint (you can use google slides to work together)
