2 Q: What is an Assessment?
A: two types of activities that is used for collecting information about how much knowledge and skill the student has learned (measurement) and making a judgment about the adequacy of the student’s level of learning (evaluation)

3 Q: Why Should we Assess Students Learning?
Summative Evaluation -Assigning a grade to sum up how well a student performed Formative Evaluation -Quizzes, oral reading ,worksheets; to monitor progress Diagnosis -Help teachers understand the level a student is on Effect on Learning -Students who take between 4-6 exams during a term learn more than students who take fewer or no exams. Why is that?

4 Q: What are some Ways to Measure Student Learning?
Written Test-measures knowledge about a subject Selected Response, Short Answer, Essay Performance- use knowledge/skills to solve problems -Writing Assessments, Demonstrations, Exhibitions, Portfolios Use of Rubrics- scoring guide that specifies the capabilities that students should exhibit. Formative evaluation Responsive to Cultural Diversity

5 Q: What are the Disadvantage/Advantages of the Various Test?
Selected – response/matching- can be easily scored. They allow teachers to ask many ?’s in a short time -Disadvantage- they measure lower levels of learning and do not reveal what students know Short answer- are easy to write -Disadvantage- they measure lower levels of learning Essay- test a higher level of learning. Require students to recall and organize ideas -Disadvantage- hard to grade Performance- access how students complete tasks under realistic conditions, provide flexibility/creativity -Disadvantages: time consuming, explaining grades, help students, do not use summative evaluation

6 Q: How do you Evaluate Student Learning?
Norm-Referenced grading- comparing students -based on non external criteria - evaluate advanced level of learning, SAT’s, Entrance Tests Criterion- Reference grading- compare students performance to stated criteria -Shows strengths/weaknesses Mastery Approach- master goals at own pace -Multiple Opportunities

Worshipping Averages Keeping the nature and content of a test secret Using zero indiscriminately Keeping the criteria for an assignment secret Providing insufficient instruction Shifting criteria Teaching one thing but testing for another Combining apples/oranges Using pop quizzes to motivate students
