2 Figure 1 GBPs Restrict Shigella Motility in IFNγ-Stimulated Epithelial Cells After inducing its own uptake, Shigella escapes from the bacteria-containing vacuole and assembles an actin tail to move from cell to cell (upper half of the figure). IFNγ induces the expression of GBPs that encage the cytosolic bacteria and prevent actin tail formation. Shigella injects the E3 ligase IpaH9.8 to neutralize this host defense response. IpaH9.8 ubiquitylates GBPs, which are targeted to proteasomal degradation, allowing the restoration of bacterial motility (lower half of the figure).
