You learn to write better by reading. You learn to read better by writing. Reading and writing work together to improve your ability to think.

3 Reader’s Workshop Genre Studies on Historical Fiction and Biography
Author Study on Patricia Polacco Science/Social Studies Units Lots of daily reading time. Focus on critical thinking and thoughtful responses. Students need to be reading at home. Homework will include 30 minutes of reading, 4 nights per week.

4 WRITER’S WORKSHOP Genre studies on Historical Narrative, Informational Feature Article, and Opinion Essay Authentic use of the Writing Process Use of technology Research Lots of writing will take place in all subject areas!! Big focus on being specific and detailed.

5 Grammar & Word Study Figurative Language
Prefixes, suffixes & root words Verb Tenses Identifying synonyms, homophones, antonyms, etc…. Vocabulary Handwriting: Cursive

6 Fractions Place Value and Base 10 2-digit multiplication Long division (3-4 digits by one digit) Measurement/conversions Measuring and drawing angles Problem solving Very important to build speed and fluency in multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction facts, reflexmath.com is a great resource for practice.

7 Physical Science Life Science Earth & Space Science Engineering and Technology Scientific Method and Scientific inquiry Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

Exploration/settlement of Missouri Westward expansion of U.S. Missouri’s role in the Civil War Contributions of Thomas Jefferson Economics Jefferson City trip-May

9 Homework Read 30 minutes 4 times a week Math fact practice
Weekly homework packet goes home on Mondays and due the next Monday Unfinished work Factors into overall reading & math grades Planners signed nightly Weekly Behavior Charts

10 Planners Planners filled out daily Parent signature each night
Help keep students organized and is a tool they will use throughout the rest of their school career. Students receive a sticker and BEST sticker each day for signed planners.

12 Technology All students have an Office 365 account.
Online version of Microsoft Office. Gives them access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.. Allows them to share documents with me. They can work at home and at school!! VSE Symbaloo gives them quick easy route to all sites used at school or needed for homework. Link to VSE Symbaloo can be found on my webpage under Student Technology Links. Password page will be coming home soon.

13 Field Trips Arts Partners Field Trip to Coterie Children’s Theatre – March Jefferson City Capitol Tour – May Must have turned in volunteer packet. Background check must be complete. If you want to know if you have been approved, contact the office.

14 Scholastic Book Orders
Sent home monthly Books purchased earn bonus points for the classroom library. Great opportunity to earn free books for our classroom library. Online ordering earns our classroom free books.

15 We do not celebrate birthdays with food treats
We do not celebrate birthdays with food treats. If you choose, you may send in non-food treats such as pencils, erasers, sticker…. I recognize birthdays in class with a pencil, sticker and message!

Field trips for every grade Teaching tools / supplies / aides not covered by school budget Enrichment activities such as Grandparents Day Bingo for Books Mornings with Mom, Donuts with Dad Trunk or Treat Field Day Carnival and MORE! Visit our Website WHY JOIN THE PTA? Membership is just $8 per child. Our goal is for every student to be represented! PTA’s budget for the year determined by membership and one fundraiser (APEX fun run in October). The more members, the more support we can offer! Variety of participation / volunteer options to fit any schedule! We meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month in the school library. Not mandatory, but new ideas and voices are always welcome!
