5. Ozone (O3) in Stratosphere
absorbs UV radiation preventing it from reaching Earth
holes in ozone layer over Arctic and Antarctic appeared in 1970’s
due to CFC’s (clorofluorocarbons) in spray cans, air conditioners and refrigerators
1987 governments around world agreed to stop using CFC’s
ozone layer beginning to recover but will take 50 years
