2 Terms / Concepts A checking account is also called a “demand” deposit account because funds can be withdrawn, or “demanded” at any time by cashing a check. Check Writing Terms and Definitions: Balance: The amount of money currently in your checking account. Check Register: A booklet that is used to keep a record of all your checking related transactions, including checks written and deposits. Check Stub: A strip on the side of some checks that is torn off. Used to keep record of the amount of the check.

4 Terms / Concepts Minimum Balance: The minimum amount of money required in your account. Having an amount less than the minimum balance may result in extra service charges or reduced privileges. Non-sufficient Funds: When you write a check for more money than you have in your account. Payee: The party that receives the check. Payor: The party that writes the check (to the payee). Service Charge: An amount the bank charges (fees) for use of the checking account.

10 Check endorsement Endorse a Check - when the payee signs their name on the back of a check to cash or deposit the check. Blank– signature only Restrictive - write For Deposit Only (FDO) and sign (may also write account number or the name of your financial institution) Special – payee transfers the check to someone else by writing Pay to the order of and the recipient’s name after the signature Endorsing a check at wikihow and youtube (0:55)

11 Making a deposit Image is taken from The date is the date your are making the deposit (not the date of the check you are depositing. If you were depositing cash money, write the total amount of cash on the Cash line. Checks are listed separately and totaled. If you are keeping some of a check and depositing the balance, use the Less Cash box to show what you are keeping.

16 Using a check register A check register is a paper or digital tool to record transactions and update the balance. Write down in your register whenever you - deposit money in your account write a check use your debit card deduct a fee that the bank charges withdraw money from your account have interest added to your account The trick is to keep up with it at the moment and not try to remember to fill it in later.
