1. DOMOVYK (BROWNIE) A SLAVIC FOLKLORE CREATURE

2. Brownie (domovyk),  a small, industrious old man is believed to inhabit houses and barns. Rarely seen, he was often heard at night, cleaning and doing housework; he also sometimes mischievously disarranged rooms. Cream or bread and milk might be left for him, but other gifts offended him.

3. In Ukrainian folklore domovyk (brownie) is a positive character, a symbol of wealth and home comfort

4. Some beliefs considered the most respected members of the family became “domovyks” after death

5. Some legends say that wealthy people are so eager to have Domovyk at home that they make him themselves. They put a very small egg in the arm-pit and carry it for nine days and on the tenth day a domovyk hatches and stars serving the family

6. Ukrainian writer S. Plachynda, who paid much attention to studying ancient Ukrainian beliefs , said that domovyk was a god of home hearth and helped the family in their house keeping.

7. Later ,under the influence of Christianity, domovyk was thought to be an evil spirit, that can do harm to the home. It became the symbol of home mischief.

8. Nowadays a doll domovyk is to guard the family against all kinds of mischief and bring wealth and health.
