3. The Distributive Property
If a, b and c are any numbers, then
a(b + c) = ab + ac
a(b – c) = ab - ac

4. Example 1: Simplify 2 (6 + 3) 2(6) + 2(3) 12 + 6 18
Multiply both terms in the parentheses by 2 then simplify.
12 + 6 18

2 (x + 3)
2(x) + 2(3)
2x + 6
