7 Modroc / Paper Maché - Canopic Jars Unit: Egyptian Art – Sculpture Lesson Plan: Canopic Jars / Sarcophagus Year Class 10/11 Lesson Organisation and outcome: After an introduction about Egyptian art, hieroglyphics and ancient religion, continue to discuss details about the Sons of Horus and the different canopic jars used in the embalming process. Explain to class that there was a group of four gods in the Egyptian religion. They believed that the sons of Horus helped their king go to the afterlife. Pupil partner discussion – opinions/comments – why, what for, how used, contents etc. See more at: The names of the sons of Horus were Imsety, Duamutef, Hapi and Qebehsenuef. Three of them were in the shape of animals. Egyptians used these gods in burial. They made them in the shapes of jars and buried them with the mummies. They created jars in the shape of the sons of Horus and they would contain parts of the body while they prepared the body for burial.   Class 10 you need to pick one of the four Sons of Horus to design and recreate.

8 Instructions First, make the heads out of newspaper and tape on top of the lid. Make it as secure as possible. This will help in the later stages of your design. After the heads are finished and securely fastened to the lids, you may then begin to place mod roc around the jar. (Another option is paper maché - that you can form with your hands paper macheing the outside of the Pringle's cans with newspaper strips.) When finished, allow to set and dry - check the materials are okay during this time. Once dry, you can paint the entire can and head following your design ideas. You may use markers or paints to paint hieroglyphics on the outside of the cans. Remember to decorate in the style of the Egyptians. If you finish early you can think about designing a sarcophagus. How would you do this, thinking of the process you have followed ?

9 What can you see ? What do you notice? What comments can you make about these?

10 Duamutef is jackal headed. Qebehsenuef is falcon headed.
Imsety is man headed. Hapi is ape headed. Duamutef is jackal headed. Qebehsenuef is falcon headed. They were to guard the north, south, east and west. The innards from the deceased were placed in the jars and placed next to the mummy for the next life…the afterlife.

As we have learned the Canopic Jars had heads that resembled the four sons of Horus, the God of the Nile. Imsety had a human head and guarded the liver. Duamutef had a jackel’s head and guarded the stomach. Qebehsenuef had a falcon’s head and guarded the intestines. Hapy, or Hapi, had a baboon’s head and guarded the lungs. These jars were put in the tomb next to the body.

13 Now it’s your turn. You must design a canopic jar that is suitable for a pharaoh. Select which god you will use to protect the organs from the great king.
