Sex Determination People – 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs
•22 pairs are homologous (look alike) – called autosomes – determine body traits 1 pair is the sex chromosomes – determines sex (male or female) •Females – sex chromosomes are homologous (look alike) – label XX Males – sex chromosomes are different – label XY

Sex-Linked Notes If a gene is found only on the X chromosome and not the Y chromosome if the gene is recessive, males only need 1 gene to show trait rather than 2 this is why males show trait more often Example: Red/Green Colorblind, male pattern baldness, hemophilia, Duchenne, Muscular Dystrophy Females sex genes are both XX, homozygous recessive
