Plays were part of festivals to honor Dionysus, god of wine Playwrights competed for honors Plays were held outdoors in amphitheaters No curtains Violence occurred offstage

3 Drama Literary terms: Monologue: a speech made by one character in a story, play, or poem Aside: short speech expressing the character’s thoughts, made directly to the audience and inaudible to the characters on stage Comic Relief: person who serves to lighten the mood of the play

4 Continued… Soliloquy: A long speech expressing the thoughts of a character made alone on stage Oxymoron: a statement that contradicts itself Allusion: reference to a famous person, place, etc. from literature, history, etc…

5 Continued… Prologue: Introduction to a literary work. Often sets the scene and introduces the conflict. Epilogue: concluding section added to the end of the work
