Pre-Raphaelite Art John William Waterhouse

2 The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
The Pre-Raphaelites were a group of painters in the mid-nineteenth century. They believed in nature and color in painting, as opposed to much of the art of their time which was dark and lacking in detail.

3 Pre-Raphaelites The Pre-Raphaelites believed that art should
be more realistic, and not as artificial as some of the art they had seen. Therefore they took extra time to learn about nature, so that it could be perfectly represented in their works.

4 Grand Manner Use of bitumen kept the paintings dark, and lacking in
detail. Usually for portraits of people.

5 Pre-Raphaelite With added color and texture,
and a realism that other styles did not capture. Like a photograph.

6 Pre-Raphaelites The Pre-Raphaelites used both nature and
romance in their paintings. They also liked to draw on themes from mythology. One of the best collections of Pre-Raphaelite work is in Birmingham, England, and some believe that it was an influence on J.R.R. Tolkien. What books did he write?

7 The Lord of the Rings People believe that the mythological scenes shown in the paintings gave him some ideas for his fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings.
