1. Action #1 = Break
Take a piece of chalk out of the bag for you and your shoulder partner to share.
Break the piece of chalk into 3 pieces.
Record your observations and weather it is a physical or chemical change.

2. Action #2 – Pound (gently)
Place 2 pieces of chalk in plastic bowl.
Using the spoon, pound/crush the chalk into small pieces. It should look almost like sand when you are done.

3. Action #3 – Mix with water
Place ½ your chalkdust in the cup labeled water.
Fill half-way full of water and stir.
Record your observations.
Rinse out in the sink and dry with a paper towel.

4. Action #4 – Mix with Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Place ½ the chalk dust in the cup labeled “HCl”.
Using the pipette, drop 20 drops onto the chalk. LISTEN CAREFULLY 
Record your observations
Clean out cup and dry with paper towel.

5. Analysis and Conclusions
Complete the table by identifying each action as a physical or chemical change. Explain your reasoning in the “Explanation/Evidence” column.
