Transition to College/Career Suggestions from Don’t Tell Me What to Do, Just Send Money
“Hands-on” Parenting —students need to face the bumps in the roads and be able to work out problems independently. Be a consultant, not a Supervisor! Allow them to experience consequences as it is vital toward responsible adulthood! Academic—not unusual to change majors. Everyone is smart here! Social/Emotional—it’s a roller coaster Knowing the Difference between problems and crisis Normal to unload worries on parents so student feels better Common to feel as if everyone else is happy and well adjusted while they feel awkward and out of place Listen to their voice! We always talk academics, but socio-emotional preparedness is equally as important if not more! Just some food for thought. Insurance, renting an apartment, washing clothes, cooking, etc. etc. Pay now – pay later. Natural consequences – Take off helicopter – Balance between letting go and doing things for them – listening to them not telling them what to do – asking them what do they think they should do – empowering them Use their resources at college campuses
