Due to the sale of Liberty Bonds, the US was able to loan $10 billion to the Allies New Federal Agencies War Industries Board: oversaw war production Other agencies made sure that the war was financed and not jeopardized Federal Regulations on Products War related products and industries Hoover (Food Administration) opposed rationing and price controls, instead encouraged voluntary restraints Increased food production and reduced waste All these regulations and agencies increased government control

Fuel consumption was regulated Gasless days Daylight savings time Some questioned government intervention had gone to far Some progressive advancements slipped Anti-trust suits declined Corporate profits sky rocketed

4 Loyalty Fear of sabotage and spies (espionage) was widespread and led to….. Federal control on news and information. Repressed freedom of speech Committee on Public Information created to rally support for war Immigration restrictions, literacy tests— preached”100% American.” Revival of Nativisim General hostilities toward the Germans “Huns”

Espionage Act in1917: illegal to interfere with the draft Amended by the Sedition Act in1918: illegal to discuss anything “disloyal, profane, scurrilous (course or vulgar), or abusive” against America Including the government, Constitution, the army or navy Socialists did not like war IWW: Industrial Workers of the World wanted to over throw capitalism—Quieted by government and vigilantes
