States of Matter
2
Check in!! Get a post it- DON’T write your name, don’t write the date
Write ONE THING you remember about States of Matter, Physical Transformations or Particle Theory of Matter. When you are done come up and stick it on the board in the correct column
3
Physical Transformations
What do we know? States of Matter Physical Transformations Particle Theory
4
Review from last class…
True or False? The particle theory states that particles are always in motion. The particle theory states that particles that are closer together have weaker attractions. The particle theory states that everything is made up of compounds. The particle theory states that the spaces between particles are larger compared to the particles themselves. The particle theory states that particles change their composition when changing states. The particle theory states that particles move faster when heated up.
5
The Particle Theory All matter is made up of particles.
Particles are always moving. The spaces between particles are larger than the particles themselves All particles of the same substance are made up of the same particles regardless of state. Particles are attracted to one another. The closer they are the stronger they are attraction. Particles move faster when heated and slow down when cooled.
6
States of Matter and Particle Theory
7
Solids Attraction between particles is strong
Spaces between particles is small (particles are close together) There is little motion of particles- movement is mostly vibrational Definite Shape and Definite Volume
8
Liquids Attraction between particles is medium
Space between particles is medium Movement is vibrational and rotational Definite Volume but no Definite Shape
9
Gases Attraction between particles is weak
Space between particles is large Movement is vibrational, rotational and translational No Definite Shape and No Definite Volume

States of Matter Matching Game
You will be playing in groups of 3. There are three picture cards. Place them face down on the table. Each player/group picks a picture card. That is the state they will be collecting for.
11
States of Matter Matching Game
Shuffle the other cards and spread them face down on the table (or floor) Take it in turns to pick a card. If it describes your picture card, keep it. If not, put it back on the table (or floor) face down. The game continues until all the players have completed their sets. Let me know when you have completed the game so I can verify your answers

Particle Theory of Matter Worksheet
*REMINDER* There will be a quiz on everything learned in new unit thus far including: States of matter (Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma, Colloid) Physical Transformations (Melting, Freezing, Evaporating, Condensing, Sublimation, Deposition) Particle Theory of Matter (6 Statements) Particle Theory and States of Matter (How do solids, liquids and gases follow the particle theory) * Two of the thinking questions will be on your quiz* *To do- In Class* Complete the 2 sided worksheet; put name on it and place in hand in bin (homework if not completed) Once completed try the “Thinking Questions”; on a sheet of looseleaf
