1 Review and method section
LAQ: Designing a study Review and method section

2 Long answer questions Write a results section Design a study
Write a method section: today’s lesson Evaluating limitations of research and suggesting improvements

3 Review Identify the subheadings you may be asked about in a LAQ ‘design a study’ section 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

4 Homework page 53: Design an experiment that could be conducted in a classroom to test the effects of different genres of music on concentration Compare your answers to these questions with a partner: Was the study investigating a difference or a relationship? What was the research method? What were the variables? What was the design? What EVs would need to be controlled? What details would Pts need to know?

5 Exam Q: 12 marks Design an experiment that could be conducted in a classroom to test the effects of different genres of music on concentration. You should use a repeated measures design. Include: Operationalised variables Hypotheses Details of how to control EVs A description of the procedure with sufficient detail for the study to be carried out

6 Task: Fill in the gaps in the exemplar answer on page 54
Highlight the key terminology What features of the answer mean it would get full marks?

7 Mark scheme: 12 marks IV and DV (2 marks) Hypotheses (2 marks)
Controls (4 marks) Procedure (4 marks)

8 Extension task: page 55 (12 marks)
Design a study to investigate the relationship between age and memory. You should include sufficient details to permit replication, for example a hypothesis, variables, detail of design and procedure.

9 True or false? There are 4 possible types of LAQ.
You will always get a LAQ in Research Methods. You get 15 minutes to answer a LAQ. You only get credit for referring to the scenario. You need to apply all the information you have learned from Y1 and Y2.

10 Task: Method section What are the 4 sections in a method?
What tense is the method written in? Why? Which feature of science is important in reporting the method of research in a journal?

11 Write a method section Aim: to investigate food preferences in gender
Many theories have been offered to explain food preference in humans; some of which are biological, others due to environmental influence. For example, it is said that more people are now choosing to eat vegetarian diets than ever before.

12 Task You will design a study to investigate whether more males or females are vegetarians and how long the male and female participants have been vegetarian (in an attempt to identify which gender has been a vegetarian the longest) Sampling Participants in this study should be over 16 years of age. Explain why. Design your study to gain participants using volunteer sampling. How will you achieve this? Procedure Decide whether this will take the form of written responses to a simple questionnaire or a verbal survey of participants. Design and justify your materials accordingly. Whichever method you choose, you should plan and produce an appropriate set of procedures for your investigation. This way, you will know exactly what you intend to do and/or say to participants and what they have to do/say during the investigation. Include all steps and instructions written to …?

13 Method section Write up the method for the study under the following headings: Design Participants Materials Procedure Write in the past tense

14 Homework Timed exam Q next lesson: any long answer question (design a study/results section/method section) Download the document on the website on the method section you have attempted, print it out, fill in the gaps and bring to next week’s lesson
