10 Assignment- Characterization
Paulo Coelho uses indirect characterization to help the reader relate to the protagonist Santiago. When discussing his travels with the Merchant’s daughter, Coelho writes that Santiago, “as the time passed, the boy found himself wishing that the day would never end…he recognized that he was feeling something he never experienced before: the desire to live in one place forever”(8). Coelho hopes the reader can make the connection between this feeling and his or her own life. Coelho captures the feelings of “puppy love” or the sudden rush of feelings when you are attracted to someone, which is an experience that most feel more than once in their lives. This emotion is so powerful that Santiago questions his dreams and is willing to give it up to stay with the “girl with the raven hair”(8), which makes the hero of the story human.
