Correlating Rock Strata Notes
Aim: How do we correlate rocks?
2
Correlation Geologists try to match similar rock strata in different locations to see if they formed at the same time. This process is called Correlation Lets learn about correlation
3
Several Correlation Methods
Correlation by Continuity- “walking the outcrop” matching up rock layers that appear to be the same type and thickness. Comparing Properties- checking the color, composition and texture of rock strata to make sure they’re the same.

Several Correlation Methods
3. Volcanic Markers- volcanic eruptions leave a layer of ash in a wide area over a short period of time.
5
Several Correlation Methods
4. Index Fossils- the remains of organisms that lived for a short time, but lived all over the Earth. Example- Humans will be an excellent index fossil.
7
Which fossil is a good index fossil?
