Background What different kinds of cartoons can you think of?

3 What is an Editorial Cartoon?
Editorial Cartoons An illustration or comic strip containing a political or social opinion, that usually relates to current events or personalities. The cartoon’s opinion can usually can be summed up in a sentence or two.

4 Analyzing an Editorial Cartoon
Consider what position the cartoonist takes and why s/he takes that position. Think of the cartoon as a complex argument before responding to it. The cartoon does more than simply present a point of view. It invites the reader to take part in a meaningful dialogue.

5 What is an Editorial Cartoon?
Who or what is the focus of this cartoon? What is the political or social message of this cartoon?

6 Directions: As you look at the following cartoons, on a piece of paper: Write down the main point of the cartoon (1-2 sentences) List and explain the features of the cartoon that best make the cartoonist’s point.
