2 Vector Row Boat Problem
Given Information: A Row boat is pointing perpendicular to the bank of a river. The rower can propel the boat with a speed of 3.0m/s with respect to the water. The river has a current of 4.0m/s.

3 a.)construct a diagram in which the two velocities are represented as vectors

4 b.) Find the vector which represents the boats velocity with respect to the shore.
V net= V boat + V water Since V of boat and V of water are perpendicular Vnet= square root of Vboat2+V water 2 Vnet= square root = 5m/s

5 c.) At what angle is this vector inclined to the direction in which the boat is pointing?
The angle is inclined to the direction of 53.1°. This is found with the formula Tan θ = V water/V row boat Tan θ= 4 m/s /3m/s

6 c.) diagram

7 If the river is 100 m wide, determine how far downstream of the launch point the rowboat is when it reaches the opposite bank. D= distance down stream D/100m= V water/ V row boat D/100m= 4m/s / 3m/s D= 133m

8 Conclusion The row boat has reached the other side of the river at 5 m/s with an angle of 53.1° And is 133m downstream from the launch point, in a 100m wide river.
