4 MOPITT: Satellite observations of tropospheric CO
Launched: Dec aboard EOS-Terra (polar orbit, ~3 days for global coverage) Designed to measure: columns of CO and CH4 and profiles of CO Resolution = 22 km x 22 km Detection of CO: 4 thermal emission (4.6 mm) and 2 solar reflected (2.3 mm) Sample Avgker over NH Pacific Averaging kernel (A) describes the relative weighting of the ‘true’ mixing ratio (x) at each level to the retrieved value (x) Averaging kernels are extremely variable Retrievals are not very sensitive to vertical (degrees of freedom for signal = 1.2) One global a priori (xa) ^

Slope: Model is high (avg=18%) over SE Asia BB too high (or too much convection?)

6 Caution: Model comparison with MOPITT is sensitive to the vertical distribution of CO
Question: Can the CO in GEOS-CHEM be redistributed such that the retrieved MOPITT CO and model (with averaging kernel applied) agree? Test case: Feb. 23, 2001 (15.6°N, 102.7°E) Model MOPITT Model overestimates at all altitudes Apply this shape factor to correct for an overly-convective model to “raw” model profile (conserves total column) Model and MOPITT agree!
