4. Zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, antelopes, and African buffalo don’t think about the border between Kenya and Tanzania when they migrate. They simply follow their instinct that keeps them in fresh grass. The carnivores that follow close behind – like lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs – don’t care about borders either. They simply remain ready to feast on any animals that stumbles or strays from the herd. This vast Kenyan/Tanzanian savannah holds the world’s greatest concentration of wild animals. Kenyans know their worth: tourists from all over the world come to view them. The animals are protected in Kenya’s national parks and game reserves that cover almost 10% of the country.

5. Arab traders dominated Kenya’s coast until the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, who were in turn expelled by the Omanis. One of Kenya’s nomadic tribes is the Masai. Until recently, to demonstrate their bravery, young Masai men were required to hunt a lion alone, armed with nothing but a shield and a spear. How do lions hunt, and what separates lions from all other cats?

7. Lions are the only cats in the world that live in family groups (called prides). Prides are very important, for it affects how lions obtain food. First, if lions can take food from other animals –usually hyenas – they do. Secondly, when lions do hunt, the females of the pride usually do the work, though there are times where extra strength of a male is needed to bring down larger prey. In any case, the male lions eats first. Typically, the pride’s hunting team divides into two groups, with one group circling around to get ahead of the prey. The second group scares the prey to stampede or run to where the first group is waiting. A lion misses more prey than it catches, and it is common for lions to go for days without eating.
