4 September 2004 TG4b Newsworthy 1 has proven its value in the marketplace, but customers asked for better performance in the sub-GHz bands, presently limited to 40Kbps (at 915 MHz) and 20Kbps (at 868 MHz). The TG4b team started the week with four proposals for enhanced sub-GHz PHY, expecting a difficult down-select. The four proposers (Freescale, Dr. Wolf & Associates GmbH, Institute for Infocomm Research and WXZJ) met and produced a merged proposal without resorting to down-selection process. The merged proposal offers over 200 Kbps performance, backward compatibility, and makes excellent technical and commercial sense. The TG4b team approved the merged enhanced sub-GHz baseline proposal during the September Interim meeting in Berlin. Robert Poor, Ember Corporation

5 September 2004 TG4b Newsworthy 2 The current security suite is composed of three main components: AES-CCM, CBC-MAC, and AES-CTR. Several problems have been identified with the existing suite, such as vulnerability to replay attacks under certain conditions. Rene Struik of Certicom proposed CCM*, a security suite that replaces the CCM, MAC, and CTR components with a unified implementation. The CCM* system requires less storage, smaller implementation (measured in gates or lines of code), and eliminates the identified vulnerabilities of CCM/MAC/CTR suite. The TG4b group approved the CCM* baseline proposal during the September Interim meeting in Berlin. Robert Poor, Ember Corporation
