1 Research Paper Writing 101

2 Writing a Thesis Thursday, June 2nd

3 What is it? for most student work, it's a one- or two- sentence statement that explicitly outlines the purpose or point of your paper.

4 What does it do? A thesis should point toward the development or course of argument the reader can expect your argument to take, and it is normally placed at or near the end of the introductory paragraph.

5 What does it contain? The thesis sentence must contain an arguable point. A thesis sentence must not simply make an observation -- for example, "Writer X seems in his novel Y to be obsessed with lipstick." Rather, it must assert a point that is arguable: “Writer X uses lipstick to point to his novel's larger theme: the masking and unmasking of the self."

6 What it determines The thesis sentence must control the entire argument. Your thesis sentence determines what you are required to say in a paper. It also determines what you cannot say. Every paragraph in your paper exists in order to support your thesis. Accordingly, if one of your paragraphs seems irrelevant to your thesis you have two choices: get rid of the paragraph, or rewrite your thesis.

7 Is it fixed in concrete? *A thesis is not fixed in concrete, but rather is a fluid statement* You can change it as you research more and get new ideas.

8 A contract The thesis is like a contract between you and your reader.
If you introduce ideas that the reader isn't prepared for, you've violated that contract.

9 Building a Sequence thesis statements are basically made up of your topic and a specific assertion about that topic, therefore, THESIS = TOPIC + SPECIFIC ASSERTION

10 The “shoulds” of a thesis statement:
Summary The “shoulds” of a thesis statement:

11 a good thesis statement should take a stand - don't be afraid to have an opinion; if after your research, your opinion changes, all the better - means you have been thinking; you can write a new thesis statement!

12 a good thesis statement should justify discussion - don't leave your readers saying to themselves "So what" or "duh?" or "like what's your point?"

13 a good thesis statement should express one main idea or a clear relationship between two specific ideas linked by words like "because," "since," "so," "although," "unless," or "however."

14 Examples: Good or Bad thesis?
This paper will be about affirmative action and its effects.

15 Examples: Good or Bad thesis?
Affirmative action is a good policy.

16 Examples: Good or bad thesis
Affirmative Action will do more harm than good.

17 Examples: Good or Bad thesis?
Affirmative action is a good policy because it extends increased opportunity to people of color.

18 Examples: Good or Bad thesis?
Continuing to pursue a course of affirmative action will lead to increased inequality in schools and work places.

19 Forming a thesis Affirmative Action is the policy of consciously setting racial, ethnic, religious, or other kinds of diversity as a goal within an organization. In order to meet this goal, an organization may purposely select people from certain groups that are underrepresented, or have historically been oppressed or denied equal opportunities. In that application of affirmative action, individuals of one or more of these minority backgrounds are preferred over those who do not have such characteristics; such a preferential scheme is sometimes effected through quotas, though this need not necessarily be so.

20 Writing a Research Paper Outline
Thursday June 2nd

21 Format of Pipeline Outline
Thesis statement should be stated at the top of the outline Topic sentence of each paragraph (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion). Each topic sentence should introduce a part of your argument. Bulleted list of researched points that support each topic sentence/argument. As a general rule, the more detailed your outline the easier it will be to write your research paper.
