Accel Precalculus Unit #2: Algebra Topics Lesson #2: Review of Parabolas EQ: How do you write the equation of a parabola and how do you use this information to graph parabolas?

5 Patty Paper Activity: On your patty paper, use a straight-edge to draw a line, d, from one side of the paper to the other. Place a point, A, anywhere on the patty paper, just not on line d. Make approximately 15 to 25 tick marks along line d from one end to the other. They do not have to be evenly spaced. Fold the patty paper so point A lies on the left most tick mark. Crease the patty paper, then unfold it. Repeat this procedure, moving along line d. Fold, crease, and unfold for each tick mark.

7 Use the diagram to the right
to identify the significant parts of the parabola you created on the patty paper.

8 Parabola --- defined in terms of a fixed point, called the focus, and a fixed line, called the directrix In a parabola, the distance from any point P, on the parabola to the focus F, is equal to the shortest distance from P to the directrix. That is PF = PD for any point, P, on the parabola.
