6 Missouri Compromise of 1820
1819-USA had 22 states succeed enthusatic 11 of those states allowed slavery in them= slave states 11 of the remaining states banned slavery= free states Issue = Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state in 1819…This would mess up the balance. Result = in 1820, Congress adopted the Missouri Compromise, which allowed Maine to enter the USA as free state. The Missouri Compromise banned slavery north of 36°20’ latitude.

10 Compromise of 1850 By 1849, California’s population had drastically increased (Gold Rush of 1848). By 1850, there were 15 slave states and 15 free states in the USA. Issue = California wanted to enter in the USA as a free state. Result: California is admitted as a free state, and the north agrees to follow the fugitive slave act.

Compromise of 1850 Benefits for the North (Results) Benefits for the South (Results) California came into the Union as a free state. Slave trading was ended in Washington, D.C. Texas gave up its idea of annexing New Mexico. The territories of New Mexico and Utah would determine whether they wanted to be a slave state or free state. The residents of the Washington, D.C. could keep the slaves they already owned. Congress would pass the Fugitive Slave Act stating that slaves who ran away to free states would be returned to their owners.

14 The Georgia Platform Issue = Georgians held a convention to discuss the Compromise of 1850. Result = the delegates accepted the Compromise of and decided not to secede (not to leave the USA). Many Georgians did not like the Compromise of 1850; however, Georgia politicians (Howell Cobb, Alexander Stephens, & Robert Toombs) encouraged the people of Georgia to accept it. (Write this out) Alexander Stephens was a fierce advocate for Georgia NOT to secede from the Union. Result: Georgia votes not to secede from the Union.

17 Kansas-Nebraska Act Issue = In 1854, Kansas and Nebraska wanted to join the USA. Result = Both of these territories could vote on whether to allow or ban slavery. Northerners did not like the Kansas-Nebraska Act because the Missouri Compromise had already banned slavery north of 36°20’ latitude, in 1820. Arguments and fights broke out over Kansas and Nebraska between the pro-slavery and free soilers groups.

22 HOTS How did the Kansas-Nebraska Act change the Missouri Compromise?
It admitted Missouri to the Union as a free state. It created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska It permitted slavery north of Missouri’s southern boundary. It changed the requirements necessary for a territory to become a state.

23 Dred Scott Case In 1834, Dred Scott, a slave was taken by his owner from the slave state of Missouri to the free state of Illinois. Then they went to live in the free state of Wisconsin. Issue = When Dred Scott’s owner and him moved back to Missouri (slave state), Dred filed a lawsuit against his owner. Result = In 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott did not have the right to sue his master, because he was a slave.

26 The Election of 1860 Examine the four party platforms. Identify the position of each in terms of proslavery, anti-slavery, or pro-union.

27 The Election of 1860 Democratic Platform (Northern) – Stephen Douglas wanted people to decide about slavery in their own state/territory (popular sovereignty) Democratic Platform (Southern) – John Breckinridge wanted to ensure slaveholders could own slaves in new territories Republican Platform – Abraham Lincoln opposed the spread of slavery in new territories. 28 The Outcome of the Election of 1860

29 The Election of 1860 Believing that Lincoln’s ultimate goal was to end slavery, the southern states voted one by one to secede from the Union. South Carolina was the first state to secede.

30 Debate Over Secession In 1861, there was a spirited debate in the Georgia General Assembly about if the state should join its southern brethren in breaking away from the Union. Though there were strong supporters for both sides of the issue, Georgia eventually seceded from the Union after several other southern states. 31 Lincoln Wins the Election
Election of 1860 and Secession Abraham Lincoln and the Republican party won the presidential election of Lincoln believed slavery should not spread into the new territories. The Republicans wanted no slavery in territories, national banking, and protective tariffs. Southerners felt Lincoln’s election would lead to abolition of slavery in all states.

32 Secession In December 1860, South Carolina declared that it had seceded from the Union and was no longer a part of the United States. By mid-January 1861, Georgia was one of seven Southern states to secede from the United States. Alexander Stephens of Georgia , who had opposed secession, noted in a famous “cornerstone speech” that the immediate cause of the conflict between north and south was African Slavery. South= Believed in states’ rights and believed that the federal government did not have the right to tell them what to do.
