1 Newton’s First Law Pg

2 What is Force? Force is a push or a pull. Examples include:
Wind pushing a flag A magnet pulling iron towards it

3 What is Net Force? The combination of all the forces acting on an object is the net force. If the forces are in the same direction, they add together to form the net force. If the forces are in opposite directions, the net force is the difference between the two forces.

4 What is the Net Force? + ? + + =

5 What is the Net Force? ? + + + =

6 What happens when the net force is zero?
When the net force is zero, the object DOESN’T MOVE. This occurs when two or more forces are balanced forces.

7 What happens when the net force is NOT zero?
When the net force is NOT zero, the object DOES MOVE. This occurs when two or more forces are unbalanced forces.

8 What else should I know before I learn the first law?
Friction is the force that acts to resist sliding between two touching surfaces. Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion. The more mass an object has, the more inertia it has.

9 Newton’s First Law States…
An object at rest will remain at rest OR an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

10 Section Check 1 Question 1 You try and push a desk across the floor one direction but a friend is trying to push it the opposite direction. As a result, the desk doesn’t move. This is an example of what kind of forces?

11 1 A. balanced forces B. opposite forces C. parallel forces
Section Check 1 A. balanced forces B. opposite forces C. parallel forces D. unbalanced forces

12 Section Check 1 Answer The answer is A. When forces are balanced, the net force is zero.

13 Section Check 1 Question 2 What happens any time there are unbalanced forces acting on an object—that is, any time the net force is not zero? Answer Any time the net force is not zero, the object moves.

14 Question 3 Answer 1 Explain Newton’s first law of motion.
Section Check 1 Question 3 Explain Newton’s first law of motion. Answer The first law says that when the net force acting on an object is zero an object already in motion will tend to stay in motion and one at rest will tend to stay at rest.
