The League in the 1920s Starter: As a class discuss: You have investigated the League in the 1920s! Now how successful do you think it was? Give it a score out of 10 for each of it’s aims! Explain why you think this! I have your graphs so you will have to remember this part!  Aims: Discourage aggression Encourage co operation Improve living conditions Encourage disarmament 10 minutes

Successes Helped many sick, homeless and poor people Dealt with small international conflicts League encouraged countries to talk BUT was not tested that much Existing weaknesses: Can you remember the problems with the League? No army No USA Collective security BUT: Germany had joined in 1925

(JUST WATCH AS INTRO) (Watch and answer the questions either during video or after as a class!) Where is wall street? When did the crash happen? What happened? (banks, poverty, depression) What happened as a result? When did the depression come to an end? How did it affect Britain? (jobs) How did it affect Germany? (savings, Hitler) Who took over in Italy? (M……………..) What happened between countries?

Task: Read through ALL of page 39 Summarise each country’s reaction in ONE sentence Look through the statements a) to g) and decide which nationality/ nationalities would have said them ….. Then you can look at the answers on the next slide! Why would these opinions affect the League? Economic sanctions: Put financial restrictions on an aggressive country Reparations: Payments paid by Germany for the cost of WW1 Manchuria: An area of China
