22 Gardening Experience Throughout the summer weve worked on many gardens in the North Lawndale community. Nothing compared to the 15 th and Lawndale garden. When we arrived it was just an empty lot with woodchips and mulch and to the untrained eye, it was basically a waste of space. We started to spread the mulch to make beds, then we began to plant flowers and in the end the hidden beauty was now front and center to everyone to see. It was as if it was a personal gift and we could honestly look back and say that we helped make a garden. Not only did we help build a community garden I think we helped build community hope. The hope that the next time they see an empty lot instead of using it to park their cars or build a home, they could turn it into a beautiful open garden space.
