People of the Plains by Eric, Noah, Reece Matt and Sarah

2 Who are the people of the plains
The people of the plains,group of natives,who were very nomadic, meaning that they travelled alot and never truly stayed in one place.

3 Geography Western border rocky mountains, northern mid prairies. the southern was the Rio grande 370 km north of Gulf of Mexico eastern were Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Lived in high plains forests but mainly just the flat land with barely any mountains in sight

4 Weapons Hunting bows and arrows
Bows and arrows very important weapons. Used for hunting, warfare and ceremonial use. Basic material was wood. They were made stronger with sinew which was made out of buffalo gut. They used spears to hunt and tomahawks to for ceremonial use.

5 Hunting Buffalo were hunted during the summer. they would hunt them by pushing them off cliff’s the most famous buffp cliff place it head smashing buffalo jump in Alberta. Another method of Bison hunting was called the pound. Hunters would direct a part of the herd into pen where they would be killed.

6 Method of transportation
While moving from camp to camp groups of people would transport goods around on a travois which would be pulled by dogs. Snow shoes where used by the northren tribes.

7 Shelter The People of the plains lived in tipis. A tipi is a tent made of animal skin and 3-4 large wooden poles. Tipis were very durable they provided heat in the winters and cool in the hot summers. they were quick to pack up and transport because they were very nomadic

9 Clothing The peoples of the plains wore buffalo hides and wore them as robes, leggings dresses and shirts were made from buck skin. Hunters wore skins to look like the animals they hunted so they would fit in with the animals. They used buffalo intestins to use a thread. They also used antler horns as cutlery.

10 Food Created the first trail mix, called Pemnican, dried berries, dried bison lard and ground bison Meat. Extremely nutritious and tasty and it would last for months. Also they dry buffalo so they would have buffalo meat all through the winter. they fished during the low buffalo season.

11 Social Organization They had a very basic social pyramid. The chief was at the top and there was everyone else. Chief depended on hunt to prove himself worthy to be their leader.Women and men had equal rights but did very different jobs. They had also a military to enforce good behavior.

12 Contact With Other Groups
They contacted themselves more than other Canadian groups. Group divided tribes, converged religious holidays,annual hunt. War people of the plateau and traded fish with North West coast.

13 Language They spoke Algonquian languages, yet with such vast amounts of land tribes spoke different dialects so they ended up communicating with hand gestures. Yet they mainly expressed themselves through art. ex. on the side of tipis.

14 Religion The people of the plains believed that animals and plants have a spiritual power. Also known as animism People could manipulate the spirits for their own use. Sun dance religious festival.
