3 History What is entailed in History?
Why is a detailed history is important. Primary chief complaint Mechanism of injury Medical hx Previous musculoskeletal injuries Family history Allergies etc.

4 Observation Observation includes Appearance/ inspection
Deformity, swelling, discoloration, scars Body symmetry ( injured vs uninjured) Function ( injured vs uninjured) Posture or gait ( if applicable )

5 Palpation What is palpation ?
Using your hands during physical a physical examination. Size Texture Location Tenderness

6 Palpation cont. Bony structures Possible Fx Soft- tissue structures
Skin temp Swelling Crepitus Deformity Spasm Point tenderness

7 Special Tests What are they and what are they used for ? Stress tests Ligamentous instability tests Nuero tests Myotomes, dermatomes and reflexes Sports Specific functional tests

8 Scenario Read the scenario
On a separate sheet of paper you are going to categorize what belongs in each section of HOPS. 30 y/o gentleman walks into a physical therapy office and has an appointment with a PT. Pt reports to the PT that he hurt his R wrist a week ago at work and it seems to not getting better. Patient states when he tries to carry something in his R hand he has a sharp shooting pain that runs into his hand and up into his forearm. Pt also states whenever he tries to bare any weight on his hand/wrist the pain becomes unbearable. PT does not see any obvious deformity but does see swelling in the wrist region and mild ecchymosis .PT palpates all carpal bones, feels for any joint laxity and point tenderness in the hand or around the wrist. PT takes the patient through PROM and AROM. PT also checks for grip strength and compares injured to uninjured.
