Mass Media was not possible until the invention of the printing press in by Johannes Gutenberg How did this invention make mass media possible?

How has this fulfillment affected us as a society?

13 Media Saturation We are exposed to more mass media messages in one day than our grandparents were exposed to in one month. TV, music, radio, newspapers, magazines, computers, video games, ads on clothing, junk s/texts… Look around at your peers. What messages are they sending you right now?

14 Media Influence The media are deliberately trying to predispose people to BUY. Buying supports business, business advertises, advertising pays for media. Product placement clips Wayne’s World Biggest Loser

15 Manufacture and Management of Information
Most governments and businesses have “PR” departments (whether they call them that or not). Much of what is reported as “news” comes directly from PR departments and press releases. Manufactured news creates interest in a celebrity, product, company, etc.

16 Manufactured News 'I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry.' -Kristin Stewart Responses

17 Media and Democracy Political leaders have discovered the influence of the media. Think about the last presidential campaign or the current political season Politicians who twitter, websites, etc. Political ads Obama Ad million Mitt Romney 70.3 million Those who use it will get their way regardless of public policy or personal integrity. Do you agree or disagree? How does media impact the democratic process? Has media improved or impinged on the democratic process?

18 Increased Importance of Visual Communication and Information
In today’s society, the visual image is arguably more important than the printed word. HOWEVER, not much emphasis has been placed on learning to read the meanings of visual images.

19 Educating for the Future
The ability to “read” these visual images will be increasingly important. IN FACT, tomorrow’s world will be increasingly dominated by mass media. Generations of the future will need to understand how the mass media influence society. Why?
