MDG Goals Indicators Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education Target 2.A: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling 2.1 Net enrolment ratio in primary education 2.2 Proportion of pupils starting grade 1 who reach last grade of primary 2.3 Literacy rate of year-olds, women and men Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Target 3.A: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015 3.1 Ratios of girls to boys in primary, secondary and tertiary education

3 Process of drafting 2010 MDG report
StatsSA – coordinator for preparation of 2010 MDG Country Report Report prepared by external report writers Sectoral Working Groups (made up of both government as well as civil society) established by StatsSA DBE chaired SWG on Education and Gender. Indicators subjected to domestication process DBE provided data to StatsSA The MDG report was submitted to NEDLAC, CABINET and presented to UN in September 2010

7 Preliminary Conclusion
SA will most likely achieve the goal of universal primary education before the year 2015 Currently, gender parity has not been achieved at primary level (GPI = 0.96) but gap is closing. Reason for gap: higher levels of repetition among male learners GPI has been achieved at secondary level (1.05)– in fact more females than males in secondary All education goals can be achieved before the end of the year 2015 Poor performance of learners as one of the proxy indicators for measuring quality of education remains a challenge
