1 RECAP… 5 minutes Think of the answers to the following questions about Der Blaue Reiter before being quizzed about them: What year did the group form? How many artists were initially involved? What are their names? Which city did they collaborate in? What was incredibly important to the group in their work and why? 1911 4 Kandinsky, Marc, Mäcke, Klee Munich Colour to express feelings and emotions

2 Learning Objectives What I’m looking for…
Learn about the 1st German Expressionism movement, Die Brücke. Learn what their aims, objectives and concepts were and what they used to create their work. Learn about negative space. Learn about the technique, sgraffito, and use this to produce a visual copy. What I’m looking for… Good understanding and knowledge about the Die Brücke Expressionist group and how they differ to Der Blaue Reiter. An ability to visually assess the work of the Die Brücke artists and record this accurately using the sgraffito technique.

3 20 minutes Die Brücke (The Bridge)

8 Analysis & Discussion What are the similarities in all these pieces of work? What are the differences to the Der Blaue Reiter? What subject content is used here? How do you think this work has been created?

9 5 minutes Gather around the central table to learn about the SGRAFFITO technique and about NEGATIVE SPACE.

10 Then coat the entire side with black indian ink.
60 minutes Collect a laminated Die Brücke portrait along with a piece of A6 shiny paper and a black wax crayon. Completely cover the A6 paper on the shiny side in the black wax crayon Then coat the entire side with black indian ink. Dry this with a hairdryer. With the sgraffito tool, scratch away the wax to reveal the white paper. Whilst this activity takes place you will have your photograph taken by the teacher. You must convey an emotion/expression, perhaps one that describes you best.

11 PREP.WORK Produce an influence page on Die Brücke. It must include the following: 1) Title 2) Colour images 3) Written analysis (perhaps use content, form, process, mood to help) 4) Opinion 5) Information (artists’ names, place it originated, what it involved etc.) 6) Leave space for your A6 sgraffito copy to go on the page.
