Title: Torsion-Freeness for Non-Commutative Rings
Abstract: One of the basic properties of a real vector-space V is that vr = 0 yields v = 0 or r = 0 for all v in V and all real numbers r. Modules over an integral domain R which have the same property are called torsion-free. This talk will give an outline how to extend the notion of torsion-freeness from integral domains to non-commutative rings. Various non-equivalent notions will arise depending on which properties of torsion-free modules the generalization is based. We investigate for which rings all these notions are equivalent, and discuss some applications. Several examples will be given to illustrate our results.
