1 Self Management

2 Self Management – a key part of emotional intelligence

3 NLP and Personal Excellence

4 What is NLP? Neuro, meaning neurological processes of our senses
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. This is certainly a mouthful. But basically it has three elements: Neuro, meaning neurological processes of our senses Linguistic, meaning use of language to order our thoughts and to communicate Programming, meaning the way we organise our ideas and actions to produce results 4

5 In Simple Terms NLP deals with how we structure what we experience about the world through our senses, It is about the language we use and how we act to create results. These actions can be intentional or unintentional, conscious or unconscious. By understanding the internal map we have (our preferences, our values, our experiences, our prejudices - filters) we can change them; create a more useful map, which in turn creates better outcomes. 4

6 Your internal map of the world
Absorbed through your 5 senses Input The external world First Access Linguistic Map Conscious Mind Description Output Speech, Actions Attitudes Perspective Neurological Filters Linguistic Internal Images Sounds Feelings The NLP Map 4

7 Managing our responses (internal and external)
Nature Nurture External Event Behaviours Internal Representation State Physiology Our Filters Delete Distort Generalise Values, assumptions and behaviours effect our actions and state – although we might not trade them easily – if we want to they can be changed Explain that we all experience external events and we process these through filters, the filters are based upon a whole life time of memories, experiences, attitudes, language associations, decisions etc. These filters can lead us to generalise, distort or even delete (explain each of these) and provide us with an internal representation . This internal representation can alter our state of mind and our physiology and therefore our behaviours. Lets look an example. How do we manage our responses? 4

8 Changing our external behaviour means changing our internal map
Filters Delete Distort Generalise I cannot cope Angry person is becoming very challenging Fearful Lets say that someone had a very strict, angry challenging teacher for a lot of their school life – which they they were unable to cope with and have never dealt with how this made them feel – this could is a stored memory which impacts behaviour. Defensive behaviours (flight or fight) Panic 4

9 Changing our external behaviour means changing our internal map
Filters Delete Distort Generalise I can cope Angry person is becoming very challenging Confident What do you need to do to change the internal representation to “I can cope”? How is this relevant to coaching – think about the styles – what will you adopt – can you change people or can you just make them more aware of what is happening for them ? Learning log LUNCH BREAK Rational behaviours (questioning, understanding) At ease 4

10 Changing the your lens on the world will change your outcomes
Reverse the lens How would the other person see this Length the lens How will I see this in 6 months time Widen the lens Regardless of the outcome, how can I learn and grow from this. 4
