The State The Greeks and Government
‘STATE’ – Territory that has an organized gov’t. ‘Nation’ – Sizable group of people united by a common bond.

Features of a State Population: The nature of it effects the stability of the nation/state. Mobility: Political power will change when the population becomes mobile. Territory: Boundaries claimed by a nation.

Features Cont. Sovereignty: State has supreme & absolute authority within it territorial boundaries. Government: Institution that maintains social order, provides public service, & enforces decisions that bind the people in the state together.

Origin of State Force Theory: Government emerged when all people were brought under the authority of 1 person or group. Divine Right: Notion that they were chosen by god.

Purposes of Gov’t. 4 Major Purposes: Maintain Social Order
Provide Public Service National Security Provide for control of the Econ. System
