Title: Properties of Matter
Brainstorm: What is the difference between physical properties and chemical properties of matter? What are examples of each?

Copy and complete the chart using the properties provided for each substance along with additional properties you observe

Properties of Matter Every pure substance (element or compound) has a specific set of properties. Properties of matter can be either physical or chemical.

Physical Properties Can be observed without changing the substance into another substance Examples: color state of matter density (mass per volume) freezing point (temperature at which a substance freezes) solubility (ability to dissolve) malleability (how easily a metal can be manipulated)

Examples: Physical Properties

Chemical Properties Describes a substances ability to change into a different substance In other words, the ability or inability of a substance to react with another substance These properties can only be observed when a substance undergoes a chemical change Ex/ sodium has the ability to react with water, gold does not react with water

Examples: Chemical Properties

Homework Complete two four square vocabulary boxes for the terms:
1. Physical property 2. Chemical property
