BACKGROUND
Letter written by Paul in around 64 AD
Written to Timothy who he had left in Ephesus to lead the church there
In this section of the letter Paul advises Timothy on what to concentrate on in his ministry in order for him to be a valued servant of God

SOUND TEACHING: GOOD EXAMPLE
The importance of:
- sound teaching
- setting a good example
- emphasizing the need for salvation
Both in his personal and public life Timothy needs to be a consistent example to the church

PERSONAL LIFE (6 – 10)
Doctrine is important – feed regularly on God’s Word – diet is important, avoid false teaching (junk) and be nourished by the truth
Growing in godliness – spiritual “exercise” is more beneficial for eternity than physical exercise – training for reigning
Trusting in God for salvation – the living God will save unto eternal life

PUBLIC LIFE (11 – 16)
Preaching and teaching God’s Word is central to a minister’s role – passion and faithfulness to the truth
Setting an example to people in:
- speech
- life
- love
- faith
- purity
Keep a focus on the goal of salvation using the spiritual gifts that God has given
