2 Very large size? (at least 4 times bigger than Earth)
Spore Activity 2 Tour of the Solar System Student Sheet 1 Object Atmosphere? Liquid water? Very large size? (at least 4 times bigger than Earth) A moon in orbit Mercury Venus Earth Moon Mars Ceres Jupiter Io Europa/Ganymede /Callisto Saturn Titan Uranus Miranda Neptune Triton Write down your observations about each planet or moon. What do you think makes a planet habitable for life? How many objects in the Solar System definitely have life? 2

3 Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Mercury
Student Sheet 2 Mercury Atmosphere: None Average surface temperature: 167 ºC Size compared to Earth: 1/3 Moons: 0 Notes: there could be ice in deep craters that don’t get any sunlight. 3

4 Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Venus
Student Sheet 3 Venus Atmosphere: Carbon dioxide Average surface temperature: 464 ºC Size compared to Earth: About the same Moons: 0 Notes: Venus has a thick cover of cloud, and rains sulphuric acid. 4

5 Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Earth and Moon
Student Sheet 4 Atmosphere: Nitrogen/ oxygen Average surface temperature: 15 ºC Size compared to Earth: 1 Moons: 1 Notes: the atmosphere is 21% oxygen, which is generated by plants. Earth Notes: Earth’s companion, but much smaller. Ice may exist in deep craters near the poles. Otherwise no water. Moon 5

6 Mars Notes: Earth’s nearest neighbour.
Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Mars Student Sheet 5 Mars Atmosphere: Carbon dioxide Average surface temperature: –65 ºC Size compared to Earth: 1/2 Moons: 2 Notes: Earth’s nearest neighbour. 6

7 Ceres Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Ceres Student Sheet 6
Ceres is an asteroid. It has a diameter of about 950 km (which is much smaller than Earth). The surface of Ceres is probably made of a mixture of water ice and various carbonates and clays. It may have an ocean of liquid water underneath its surface. 7

8 Jupiter Main moons of Jupiter
Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Jupiter and moons Student Sheet 7 Atmosphere: Hydrogen/helium Average surface temperature: 110 ºC Size compared to Earth: 11 times Moons: 63 Notes: Jupiter is a gas giant. It may have a solid core, but this would be small. Jupiter Main moons of Jupiter All of Jupiters moons are much smaller than Earth, although the largest one, Ganymede, is bigger than Mercury. Io is volcanic. It gets its heat from the stretching and pulling of Jupiter’s gravity as it orbits. Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are all ice moons. 8

9 Saturn Titan: moon of Saturn
Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Saturn and Titan Student Sheet 8 Saturn Atmosphere: Hydrogen/ helium Average surface temperature: –140 ºC Size compared to Earth: 8 times Moons: 47 Notes: Saturn is a gas giant. It may have a solid core, but this would be small. Titan: moon of Saturn Titan has had a space probe land on it. It has an atmosphere, but it is very cold (-180 ºC) and any water would be frozen solid. It is smaller than Earth. 9

10 Miranda: moon of Uranus
Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Uranus and Miranda Student Sheet 9 Atmosphere: Hydrogen/ helium Average surface temperature: –195 ºC Size compared to Earth: 4 times Moons: 27 Notes: Uranus is a gas giant. It may have a solid core, but this would be small. Uranus Miranda is very small (it has a diameter of 470 km). It is made of solid ice. Miranda: moon of Uranus 10

11 Triton: moon of Neptune
Spore Activity 2 Solar System poster: Neptune and Triton Student Sheet 10 Atmosphere: Hydrogen/ helium Average surface temperature: –200 ºC Size compared to Earth: 4 times Moons: 13 Notes: Neptune is a gas giant. It may have a solid core, but this would be small. Neptune Triton is about the same size as Earth’s moon. It is made of ice and rock. It is unlikely to have any liquid water. Triton: moon of Neptune 11
